How To Build A Freestanding Farmhouse Laundry Tub2

Hi there! Hubby and I have truly enjoyed remodeling our tiny laundry/mud room.  This last project completes it!

This was the sad state of the laundry tub before.... you can see a corner of it in the first photo.  Then a full on pic of ugliness...😣

Underneath that 'glorious skirt', were plastic legs and plenty of dust bunnies living under there.  I really wanted to make it freestanding.

For one, I wanted it easier to clean underneath it.  The second reason was, if for some reason we needed to work on the washer and dryer, it would be easier not to have those legs in the way.

Hubby is the math guy. ❤️  We discussed what I wanted and he started the 'design' for the frame to hold the tub.  This makes my brain hurt... 🤯

I had no idea how difficult it was.  There is a LOT more to it than you think!

This isn't going to be a step by step tutorial, but more of how we did it.  First, you need to find all of your studs.  How far do you want it off the ground? Work around plumbing.  Making sure it's level, knowing that walls are never level.

What if someone leans on the corner, will it support it? Then what was I going to attach my 'decor' panels to? Is the lip of the tub going to be flush or stick over. ... you get the picture... Whew!

And making sure it will fit! Plus let's remember that the laundry tub is not a square, it tapers and you have to accommodate for that.

We chose to raise the tub 4 inches.  We are tall people and for us it is soooo much better! Now I don't have to bend over awkwardly to use it.  But because we raised it, that meant we had to extend the plumbing too.  Just another thing to consider....🤔

We also ended up adding a piece of wood on the side wall, so I could attach the front panel to it.  You can see that in the next photo.

While Hubby was working on his part of the project.  I was working on creating the panels, that will make it look pretty!  I wanted it to be cohesive with the rest of the room. So, I used left over beadboard paneling from the other projects we did in this room.

Amazing what a little paint can do!

Side panel of freestanding laundry tub

This was the toughest side to put on, because there wasn't a lot of room to work with the dryer right there. The stool sitting in there was just the perfect height to hold the panel up, then I clamped it down.

From this side I was able to screw it into place.

The front panel needed to be built in place.  I added the beadboard, then the top and bottom 1x4 pieces, then the side pieces.

Just a bit of wood filler, caulking and paint and we'll be ready to install the tub!

All finished!! I just love how it blends in with the rest of the laundry/mud room!❤️

  1. Wow! I love that creative way to hide the laundry room sink! My laundry room still has the plastic tub on legs with a skirt around it. I was just thinking that it needs an update somehow. Thanks for all the information.
