Hubby and I thought it would be fun to celebrate the 250th year our nation has been independent. We purchased red, white and 'blue' flowers to plant in the front of the house and set up our American flag to be displayed throughout the summer.
These flowers aren't even fully filled out yet. Although, they look better than they did a week ago.
For the front door, I wanted something fun! Our women's group at church, made a ton of these ribbon wreaths for Christmas as a fundraiser and I thought this would be perfect for the front door!
These ribbon wreaths are fun and easy to make! You can make one in an afternoon, or while your watching a movie in the evening.
Supplies:
- Ribbon - 23 feet of red, white and blue.
- Ribbon - 11.5 ft of stripes and 11.5 ft. of stars
- Wire wreath - 12 inch (14 inch will work also)
- Pipe cleaners - 15 (cut in half to equal 30 pieces)
Wired ribbon works the best for this type of wreath. The width of the ribbon isn't too important. It helps to fill out the wreath with wider ribbon. I prefer a mix. The smaller ribbon is 1.5 inch and the wider is 2.5 inch ribbon. Some ribbon is from Sam's club. (I try to purchase most of my ribbon there when they have it. It's the best deal I can find anywhere. It's usually 50 yards for around $8!!)
I purchased the stars and stripes ribbon on Amazon. Stars and Stripes Ribbon
The wire wreath is from the Dollar Tree.
The next step is to cut all the ribbon at 9 inches. Then I cut the 'V' to give a 'flag' look to each ribbon.
Then it's time to assemble the 'flowers'. I layered the ribbon in an X fashion. Then pinch and use a pipe cleaner to secure. I laid them out for you to see, however, it's easier to pinch the middle of each ribbon first, then continue doing the same with each ribbon layering them in your hand. (See the following 2 photos.)
Twist the pipe cleaner around the ribbon to create the 'flower'.
I fluff them to make them more like a flower. I made 15 flowers with the stripes and 15 flowers with the stars.
Now, all that's left is to assemble the wreath. I simply add the flower and use the pipe cleaner to twist and secure it to the wire wreath. I also tried to alternate the stars and stripes evenly around the wreath.
Here's a close up of the pipe cleaners twisted on the wire wreath. There's no wrong way to attach it. Just make it's secure so that the flowers don't slide around.
That's it! I love how festive the wreath looks on our door!
Here's another close up of the wreath.
Blessings,
Lori
