Hold Things With Loose Hands
What does that mean to 'hold things with loose hands'? Well, the opposite would be holding onto something tightly, that you don't want to let go of. I want my life to be holding on to God! Holding on to His right hand!
Psalms 73:23-26 (NLT)
23 Yet I still belong to you; you hold my right
hand. 24 You guide me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny. 25
Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth. 26 My
health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of
my heart; he is mine forever.
However, throughout our life, we can find ourselves attached to many things. Things that might not necessarily be "bad", but they take a prominent place in your life, heart and mind.
To me, holding things loosely means, that 'all of the things in my life,' I hold with my palms open, barely holding them. If they slip through, it doesn't devastate me... Not that I'll be happy, but it's a journey of learning to trust God with everything in my life. So, if I grab on to something... I try to remember to open my hands to Him. It's all His.
Everything I have is a blessing from The Lord. It's His house, His car, His money, His job, etc. God is the ultimate owner of everything. Plus, we can't take any of it with us, only people!
1 John 5:21 (NLT)
21 Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.
We can even hold on too tightly to our family and friends. Of course we should love and cherish them, holding them with open arms and open hands. If we are holding on too tightly and if our life revolves around someone so much, we can make them an idol. God wants us to put Him first.
If you find The Lord is showing you something in your life that has become too important, maybe you're holding on too tightly... it's as simple as asking God to forgive you, then open your hands. See if it's something God wants in your life, or does it fall away.
2 Chronicles 7:14 (NLT)
14 Then if my people who are called by my name
will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked
ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their
land.
Holding things loosely recognizes who is in control of your life. Things then have the freedom to come and go. The changes of life become easier when your focus is on who is in control instead of the "stuff".
We had thought our last house was our 'forever' house. God began changing our hearts.. (Btw...our forever house is in heaven.) At first it was a little hard to let go, but the more we loosened our grip on our home, the more peace He gave us. The more we trusted in His direction and timing, the clearer it became that we needed to sell our home. If we hadn't loosened our grip, we wouldn't be where we are now and we can clearly see that THIS is where He wants us to be, for now.
Isaiah 46:4 (NLT)
4 I will be your God throughout your lifetime—
until your hair is white with age.
I made you, and I will care for you.
I will carry you along and save you.
Philippians 4:19 (NLT)
19 And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
I am confident that God will always take care of me. He's done a fantastic job so far, and He's never failed me. He won't fail you either. So, open your hands on the things you are holding on too tightly, you will experience a unique freedom and a peace that comes from God.
Hold things with loose hands.
Blessings,
Lori
