The Illusion Of Being In Control
It's kind of funny.... We sometimes really think that we've got this life all under control. When things in life are going good, we can begin to believe that we are completely in charge of our future. And the smoother it is, the easier it is, to believe.
Yet, the longer this goes on, and the more comfortable you get, the harder the hit will feel when tough times come. And they will come...
John 15:33 (NLT)
33 I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
Ultimately we are not in control. We know it, but for some reason our minds like to dance around that fact.
I believe that we should be very thankful for the seasons of smooth sailing in our lives. However, in this fallen world, we should also expect times of difficulties and storms to blow through. I think that we get comfortable and expect the easy times to become the norm and almost feel entitled to them.
James 4:13-14 (NLT)
13 Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” 14 How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.
That way of thinking can get you in trouble when those storms hit, because they will hit. We shouldn't live in any sort of fear of them. But we should be building our faith. Training our minds to trust in The Lord for ALL things at all times.
Psalms 62:8 (NLT)
8 O my people, trust in him at all times. Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge.
Yes, God is our refuge. This may be hard to swallow, but He can use tough times to set us free from the illusion of being in control. Sometimes we need a little dose of reality. When we are trusting in ourselves, we actually are setting ourselves up as God. Thinking we can handle life.
What we really need is to give it all over to Jesus, the good times and the tough times. That's where we will find ultimate security. He is in charge of the storms. He can still the storms.
John 17:3 (NLT)
3 And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.
Blessings,
Lori
