This was one of those projects that once we thought of it, we had to act on ASAP! Why didn't we think of this YEARS ago??? We have been so thankful for our outside space. Did we love it? Not really, but we've made it work. When we first moved in it was an awful barn red... 😶 If you like that, no offense, but it was not our vibe.
Then after a few years, we decided to paint the fence, because that was barn red too... That was the best decision we made, and while we were at it, we decided to paint the deck also!
We painted the railings dark, like the fence, and the deck boards a contrasting gray.
And it looks so very nice! We loved it! But then we thought.... what if we remove the rail and put in long stairs?
WHAT?? THAT'S GENIUS!!
We started on it that week! We measured and the length was just under 16' long. Perfect!
We purchased a bunch of treated 16'- 2x6's, and started removing the old stairs and railing. We were so excited!
This was going pretty quick! (We actually finished 90% of it in one weekend.)
It already looks sooo good! We removed the one side of the handrail of the old stairs. It will be added to the other end of the new deck stairs. The easiest way to removed it was to cut it off.
It feels so much better, so open and inviting!
Now, it's time to start building! We left the one stair stringer from the old stairs and Hubby built 4 more stair stringers for support. Meanwhile, I cut boards to repair the deck from the old stairs.
It's coming along quickly! We're ready to lay these stairs down!
And before you knew it we were done!
Wow! We couldn't be happier with this project. Just a few more details and it'll be done. We have to add the other handrail.
We bought a plate to attach to the deck for the post of the handrail. That will make it secure.
I just painted it to match. Easy peasy!
And just like that, it's done! Wow! I still can't believe how it opens up the whole area! So happy! We will be painting the stairs once the boards dry out, then it will match the rest of the deck. 😍
Blessings,
Lori
